Restless Leg Syndrome
Studies have recognized a relationship between RLS and venous reflux. When valves fail blood flows backwards due to the force of gravity. This backward flow causes blood to pool and stagnant in the veins leading to aching, throbbing, cramping and fatigue. Patients with RLS and venous reflux will experience significant improvement after endovenous laser treatment.
DVT= Deep Vein Thrombosis
DVT is extremely rare although people can inherit blood coagulopathies which predispose to clot formation. DVT’s are also caused by venous stasis and vessel damage. A deep vein thrombosis causes extreme tenderness, swelling and redness in the area of the thrombus formation. The major danger of a DVT is a pulmonary embolus. Diagnosis is made with Doppler Ultrasound. Management requires anticoagulation with heparin therapy.
Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome
What is Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome? KT is a rare, congenital disorder in which patients usually have one hypertrophied leg, a port wine stain birthmark, and large varicose veins on the lateral aspect of the leg. Symptoms include pain and swelling and can lead to swollen leg and leg ulcers. This is the result of venous pump failure. The presence of AV malformation is commonly found on duplex ultrasound. Because KT is a very diffuse disease, surgical correction is virtually impossible. Jeffrey A.
