RENEW YOUR SKIN

What Is ‍ResurFX® Fractional Resurfacing?

ResurFX® is a non-ablative, fractional laser developed by Lumenis, a leader in energy-based medical solutions. Non-ablative means this laser does not destroy (ablate) surface skin cells, but rather heats the deeper skin layer to stimulate collagen production. Fractional means it affects only a fraction of the skin at a time. In comparison, ablative lasers destroy skin cells and affect a large surface area, requiring a lengthy recovery period.

Skin resurfacing with ResurFX®, on the other hand, is much gentler and has a faster recovery. And thanks to its gentler approach, this treatment is suitable for nearly all skin types. The ResurFX® laser is the only true fractional non-ablative technology, requiring only one pass to be effective. The device uses an erbium 1565 nm fiber laser and an advanced scanner that enables a high level of customization. ResurFX® has built-in CoolScan™ technology to protect the skin from overheating and injury. The device also comes with continuous contact cooling to keep you comfortable during treatment.

How does ResurFX® Fractional Resurfacing work?

ResurFX® generates beams of coherent light using a narrow range of wavelengths. These beams are absorbed deep in the skin, within the dermis layer. This causes the skin’s temperature to rise slightly, triggering the production of new collagen fibers. With new collagen now forming deep inside the skin, the skin appears smoother, firmer and overall more youthful.

This specific laser is fractionated, which means it delivers energy into the skin through thousands of tiny columns known as microthermal treatment zones. Between these zones is untreated skin. Because only a portion of the skin is treated at one time and there is healthy skin surrounding it to aid healing, recovery is much faster and the risk of complications is much lower. As the treated area begins to heal, a layer of new skin appears, restoring a fresh, youthful complexion. The ResurFX® laser treatment also encourages collagen production, filling fine lines and wrinkles while creating a healthier, more vibrant appearance. Optimal results are typically achieved with three treatments scheduled about four weeks apart.

What does ResurFX® Treat?

ResurFX® is a minimally invasive treatment that can address a wide range of cosmetic concerns on the face. At the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we frequently rely on this treatment to address the following problems:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Enlarge pores
  • Scars from acne or injury
  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Stretch marks

The Treatment

We will begin your treatment by thoroughly cleansing your skin and applying a numbing cream containing 30% lidocaine. After about an hour when the cream takes effect, your provider will glide the device’s handpiece across your skin. You will wear protective eye patches to keep your eyes safe during treatment.

A typical session takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Most patients find this treatment fairly comfortable, reporting only mild stinging and tingling, especially with the numbing cream. After treatment, you will be instructed on how to take care of your skin for the first few days of your recovery. You will likely need to have a few sessions for best results.

The Results

Most patients notice an improvement in their skin’s appearance after the first session, with continuous improvement with each subsequent treatment. As your skin builds new collagen, you will notice a gradual reduction in wrinkles and dark spots and enhanced skin elasticity and radiance. Your results will continue to improve for up to six months following your last treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a minimally invasive, non-ablative laser, ResurFX® is safe for most patients. It is suitable for darker skin tones since there is minimal risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The treatment has been FDA-approved and clinically tested for safety and efficiency.

You will need to avoid retinoids and abrasive skincare for one week prior to treatment and isotretinoin for six months leading up to treatment. It is a good idea to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds a couple of weeks before treatment to reduce your risk of pigmentation problems. If you have a history of cold sores, you may need to take antiviral medication before treatment.

Immediately after treatment, your skin will feel hot, red and inflamed. This is normal and a sign that the treatment was effective. You can apply cold packs and take mild pain relievers to minimize discomfort. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days.

After a day or two, the swelling should subside, and your skin should begin to flake and exfoliate. Using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer during this time will help your skin heal and prevent infections.

Initial results should appear after seven to ten days after your first treatment. However, it may take up to three months or multiple treatments for the full effect to become noticeable for very sun damaged skin.

The results from this treatment should last one to two years, especially with good skincare, sun avoidance and healthy lifestyle habits.
