What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is an effective procedure used to improve the skin's overall appearance. It is commonly performed to address various concerns, including wrinkles, fine lines, scars, mild to moderate sagging, pigmentation irregularities and uneven tone or texture.During treatment, a focused beam of light energy is emitted by the laser device and directed onto the targeted areas. The laser energy gets absorbed by the skin, which causes precise and controlled thermal damage. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process, triggering the procedure of new collagen to gradually smooth, tighten and rejuvenate the skin. Laser skin resurfacing is a versatile procedure that can be tailored to meet your unique needs. It can be used on the face, chest, neck or other areas where the signs of aging or other concerns appear. The depth and intensity of the laser energy can also be adjusted, allowing our skin care experts to customize the procedure for each patient.

Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedures

There are two main types of treatments to be aware of when it comes to laser resurfacing: ablative and non-ablative. Fractional lasers are also available, which can be ablative or non-ablative.

Ablative

Ablative lasers are powerful devices that emit concentrated beams of light to vaporize or ablate the skin's surface, promoting the growth of new and healthy skin cells. Ablative lasers can tighten the skin and are highly effective for treating concerns like deep wrinkles, scars and pigmentation issues. However, they typically require longer recovery periods due to more extensive tissue removal and involve potential side effects such as redness and peeling. Examples of ablative lasers include CO2 lasers, which emit a wavelength of light absorbed by water molecules in the skin, vaporizing the targeted tissue. At the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we use the Tetra CoolPeel CO2 laser to customize skin resurfacing treatments by adjusting intensity based on the patients desired results.

Non-Ablative

Compared to ablative lasers, non-ablative lasers are less aggressive. They work by targeting the deeper layers of the skin to enhance collagen production and promote skin tightening without harming the surface, resulting in less recovery and downtime. However, the trade-off is that multiple treatment sessions are often needed, and the final outcome is more subtle. At the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, our non-ablative lasers include the ResurFX®, which stimulates deep collagen production over several treatments to visibly improve skin tone, texture and tightness. ResurFX is ideal for a number of common concerns, including fine lines, mild skin discoloration, shallow scars, stretch marks, enlarged pores and more.

Fractional

Fractional lasers work by delivering concentrated energy in a grid-like pattern to create microscopic treatment zones within the skin, leaving the surrounding areas untouched. This approach allows for more controlled, precise results and fewer side effects. Additionally, the intact skin helps to support the healing and regeneration of treated areas for a faster recovery. Fractional lasers can be ablative or non-ablative. Most new CO2 lasers are fractionated to effectively rejuvenate and tighten the skin without excessive downtime, combining the benefits of ablation with the shorter recovery time of fractional treatments. Non-ablative fractional lasers, such as the ResurFX and Fotona Pixel, also allow the skin to heal much quicker.

Other Lasers

At the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we provide other types of laser treatments that don’t fit neatly into the ablative, non-ablative or fractional categories. This includes the Lumecca IPL® photofacial, which uses intense pulsed light to correct pigmentation issues and vascular lesions, and the Fotona Micropeel, a combination laser that harnesses the power of multiple technologies to rejuvenate the skin. We also offer SmoothEye® treatments, a non-ablative Fotona laser designed to lift and tighten aging skin around the eyes and eyelids with little to no downtime.      Aspect    Ablative Lasers    Non-Ablative Lasers    Fractional Lasers        Treatment Depth    Deeper (removes outer layers)    Deeper (targets deeper layers without removing)    Variable (targets specific areas)        Tissue Ablation    Yes    No    Partial (fractionated)        Downtime    Longer    Minimal    Variable        Pain/Discomfort    Possible discomfort    Mild discomfort    Mild discomfort        Collagen Stimulation    Yes    Yes    Yes        Skin Tightening    Yes    Mild to moderate    Mild to moderate        Results    Dramatic improvement    Subtle improvement    Noticeable improvement

Who Can Benefit from Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing can be a highly effective treatment option for men and women seeking to rejuvenate the overall tone, texture and appearance of their skin. It's suitable for a wide range of individuals who may have various skin concerns, such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage
  • Pigmentation issues
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Dull, uneven complexion
  • Enlarged pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Mild to moderate skin laxity

While laser resurfacing is effective for many people, it may not be right for everyone. Certain medical conditions or medications may affect your eligibility. Additionally, not all skin colors react to lasers the same way. More pigment in the skin increases the risk of hyperpigmentation, so it’s important to choose an experienced provider for the best results. To discover if laser resurfacing is right for you, schedule a consultation with the skin care experts at the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay. We can evaluate your concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve a smoother and more youthful complexion.

Understanding the Laser Resurfacing Procedure

When it comes to laser skin tightening treatments, understanding the procedure is essential to ensuring a positive experience and the most optimal outcome. Let's walk through the typical step-by-step process to provide you with a clear picture of what to expect.

  1. Pre-Treatment Prep: Before undergoing treatment, it's crucial to come in for a consultation so our laser experts can assess your skin condition, discuss your goals, and determine if you're a suitable candidate. We may also provide you with preparation guidelines, such as avoiding excessive sun exposure and discontinuing certain medications or skin care products that could interfere with the treatment.
  2. Treatment: On the day of your procedure, one of our trained professionals will explain the process in detail and prep your skin for treatment. Depending on the areas being targeted and your comfort level, we may apply a topical anesthetic to numb the skin and minimize any potential discomfort.
  3. Laser Application: Once your skin is prepped, our providers will move the laser over the target area. The device will emit controlled bursts of energy that ablate or penetrate the skin to stimulate collagen production and initiate the tightening process. You may experience sensations like warmth, tingling or mild prickling during the procedure, but discomfort is usually minimal thanks to the availability of numbing creams and the advanced cooling technology of modern lasers.
  4. Post-Treatment Care: After the procedure, our team will provide you with specific post-treatment instructions. These typically include guidelines on skin care routines, sun protection and avoiding activities that could irritate the treated area. Following these instructions will help promote proper healing and maximize your results.

What to Expect After Treatment

After your laser resurfacing procedure, it’s normal to experience redness, swelling, itching and peeling in the treated areas, similar to a mild sunburn. These side effects are temporary and typically resolve within a few days, but sun exposure can make them worse, so it’s important to protect your skin while it heals. Follow all post-treatment instructions to minimize these side effects and reduce the risk of complications such as hyperpigmentation from occurring. As your skin heals, your results will begin to emerge. The degree of improvement you see will vary depending on which laser treatment was performed, but you should notice smoother, more even and youthful skin, with a complexion that looks refreshed and rejuvenated. More aggressive lasers can achieve a dramatic outcome after one treatment, while less invasive lasers often require multiple sessions to help you reach your goals.
