LOCAL TAMPA DOCTOR AMONG FIRST IN NATION TO EARN NEW CERTIFICATION AVAILABLE FROM AMERICAN BOARD OF PHLEBOLOGY
Dr. Jeffrey Hunt of Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay Earned Stringent Certification, Extending Expert Care for Residents in the Tampa Bay Area for Common and Painful Vein Problems
TAMPA, FL – Dr. Jeffrey A. Hunt, Medical Director of Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay is among the first physicians in the nation, and the only physician in the Tampa Bay area, to earn a new certification from the American Board of Phlebology (ABPh) for the treatment of venous disease. Dr. Hunt was board certified by the ABPh in July 2008.
This is the charter class for ABPh, which includes only 248 diplomats nationwide. Hunt’s certification with the American Board of Phlebology was evaluated from his knowledge and experience in providing patient care.
To become an ABPh diplomat, an applicant must complete the requisite training or experience qualifications, meet the continuing medical education requisites, and pass a stringent certification examination. Certification periods are ten years and maintenance will be dependent on the ability of the diplomat to display competency in several areas of professional assessment and continued education.
For members in our community, it is a great advantage to have a physician earn this demanding certification and be able to assist the more than 20 percent of the population suffering from painful venous diseases, such as varicose veins. Tampa residents will not have to travel or look far to receive the most advanced care for venous issues.
The advanced procedure Hunt uses is ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, many times in combination with CoolTouch Endolaser™, which eliminates the need for surgery in an astounding number of 95 percent of patients.
Dr. Hunt is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians and is a Diplomat of the Osteopathic National Boards as well as the Flex Exam. His extensive training includes working with the founder of the American College of Phlebology. Hunt has performed more than 100,000 ultrasound-guided vein treatments and conducted FDA clinical trials to bring intense pulsed light sources to the United States. The American Board of Phlebology is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 2007 for the purpose of certifying physicians who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of phlebology. The American Board of Phlebology (ABPh) was established to:
- Improve the standards of medical practitioners and the quality of patient care related to the treatment of venous disorders and all aspects of venous disease;
- Serve the public and the medical profession by establishing initial and continuing qualifications for certification and maintenance of certification as physician specialists in the practice of phlebology;
- Examine physician candidates for certification and maintenance of certification in the practice of phlebology;
- Establish educational standards for teaching and training programs in phlebology;
- Maintain a registry of individuals who hold certificates issued by the Board.

Well Kristen Walsh is a good friend of mine and she was telling me about some of the procedures that she does here. Vein Removal Procedures-Treating Varicose Veins
For 16 years we have had innovative varicose vein treatments by using ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. For years, we started turning the liquid into a microfilm solution, which works better yet puts less solution into your system. We do this with a three-person approach; ultrasound tech, nurse and myself, the physician. Typical treatment involves three or four microinjections under ultrasound guidance that only takes four minutes. We put support stocking on the patient and they can go exercise right after the procedure. This is in contrast to previous older generation surgical stripping procedures where people have lengthy recoveries. The other procedure we do for varicose veins is called endolaser. With this it is about a one-hour procedure. There is a tiny laser fiber that goes up through the inside of the vein and then underneath tumescent anesthesia and ultrasound guidance. The vessel is coagulated and disappears. With this again they wear support hose for two days and they can exercise that evening. So all of our varicose vein procedures are very complete compared to previous generation surgical procedures with very minimal discomfort and no downtime whatsoever.
