Causes of Varicose Veins
View the Gallery
Although the exact cause of varicose veins is still unknown, physicians have determined that varicose veins form when blood vessels become weak and malfunction. Varicose veins commonly form when blood can no longer flow easily against gravity. Whether a product of dysfunctional valves or weakened walls, the end result is usually bulging veins and leg pain.
There are a number of factors that seem to contribute to poor blood vessel functioning, including:
- Standing or sitting for long periods of time
- Hormonal shifts during pregnancy

ClosureFast™ Radiofrequency (RF) Vein Closure
The state-of-the-art ClosureFast™ procedure is a minimally invasive, outpatient treatment method that utilizes radiofrequency energy to accomplish effective leg vein closure. Once the affected veins are sealed during treatment, optimal blood flow can be redirected to healthier veins for improved circulation. ClosureFast™ requires only local anesthesia and the simple procedure typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete. Compared to other treatment approaches, the ClosureFast™ technology generally results in less bruising and discomfort. Clinical studies performed by Medtronic® also show that vein closure procedures performed with ClosureFast™ result in fewer minor complications. Recovery after the ClosureFast™ procedure takes only a few days or less for most patients. Most return to normal activities the same day and walking is encouraged as a part of the recovery process
VenaSeal™ Vein Closure System
For patients who require treatment of the greater or small saphenous vein, the minimally invasive, non-thermal VenaSeal™ vein closure system developed by Medtronic® can be a suitable option. Instead of applying heat to the vein as many treatments do, VenaSeal™ sends a patented medical adhesive through a catheter, which seals and closes the vein. The greatest advantage of this procedure is that it eliminates the risk of nerve injury, which can be problematic when treating the small saphenous vein with heat-based techniques. Clinical studies performed by Medtronic® have shown that VenaSeal™ can be a safe and effective procedure for suitable candidates. Most patients return to their regular daily activities right after their procedure.
Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy for Medical Vein Treatment
Used for years to detect pregnancy and track fetal development, ultrasound technology is now being applied to vein treatments, with tremendous results. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is a revolutionary development which makes surgery unnecessary in 95 percent of patients. The Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay is proudly one of the first clinics in the country to utilize ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins.
An out-patient procedure, duplex ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy allows Dr. Hunt to both diagnose and treat malfunctioning veins. During treatment, Dr. Hunt conducts an ultrasound scan of the legs to determine the size, location, and function level of the veins. The ultrasound helps Dr. Hunt locate problematic veins, guide the sclerosing injections, and close them. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes and is repeated several times over a few weeks.
Recovery from Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy patients are encouraged to continue their normal activities, particularly exercise, since circulation helps promote recovery. People often report playing tennis, walking several miles or returning to work immediately after treatment. Several check-ups are scheduled at two and four month intervals to ensure the veins have not reopened.
Advantages of Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy
Prior to the development of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, a painful and expensive procedure known as stripping was used to treat varicose veins. Patients often required hospitalization, weeks of recovery, and often experienced noticeable scarring. Additionally, this procedure may only have removed the patient’s major saphenous vein, and may not have treated other malfunctioning vessels. Instances of recurrence are also high in patients treated with the stripping technique.
In sclerotherapy without using ultrasound, doctors can only treat the veins they see or feel, while the deeper veins, often the source of the problem, go undetected. A doctor watching the veins through ultrasound is less likely to miss a vein and is more precise in placing the injection – an important factor, since the solution can cause scarring in skin and muscle tissue. As a result of treating incompetent saphenous veins, the recurrence of spider veins is significantly reduced.
Cost of Sclerotherapy
The price of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy for varicose veins is usually about half the cost of surgery. Most insurance companies will cover this treatment.

Laser vein removal is a proven, effective treatment for unsightly broken vessels or unwanted vascular lesions. At the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we utilize the latest advances in safe, effective laser technology. These new modalities have given Dr. Hunt a method for vein removal that is safer, faster, and more effective than any previous treatment. Laser vein removal is performed by passing a specialized light through the patient’s skin. The laser light is absorbed by unwanted veins, causing them to coagulate, absorb, and disappear.
Recovery from Laser Vein Removal
Your symptoms will begin to improve immediately after the VenaCure Endolaser™ procedure is completed. However, depending on their severity, some symptoms may take one to two weeks to completely disappear. After laser vein removal treatment, you will wear a single leg compression stocking for 2 days, and you will be up and walking within 30 minutes and back to normal activities.
Advantages of Laser Vein Removal
VenaCure Endolaser™ treatment does not require any incision scars. Other more invasive treatments require a longer rehabilitation timetable and may cause scars or bruising.
Varicose Vein FAQs
What is the preferred way to treat varicose veins?
We can treat the primary saphenous trunks with VenaCure Endolaser™, RF Closure, or the VenaSeal™ procedure. We then treat the remaining varicose branches with Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy.
What is another way to treat varicose veins?
The old traditional inversion pin stripping is still being performed as well as phlebectomy where they remove small portions of the veins and ligations where they tie the trunks off. The newer RF Closure, VenaCure Endolaser™, VenaSeal™, and Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy procedures are much less invasive, more complete, and require no downtime.
*Results May Vary
How many treatments are usually required and how far apart must they be scheduled?
Treatments for varicose veins are usually done one to two times per week. Most cases can be completed in one month. We then do four follow-up exams over the a 12-month period to ensure results.
How long do the results last?
Saphenous veins and primary varicose veins do not reoccur, although it is still possible at sometime in the future to develop another varicose branch from the deep system.
