Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Hair Loss
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is a non-surgical treatment to restore hair to men experiencing male pattern baldness and women with thinning hair. Jeffrey A. Hunt D.O., R.V.S., R.V.P.I. and the team at The Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay are dedicated to bringing state-of-the-art treatments to patients in the Tampa Bay, Florida area, and we are thrilled to offer this innovative procedure that harnesses the body’s natural healing process to regenerate hair and restore confidence.
How Does PRP Work to Restore Hair?
PRP utilizes the regenerative potential of a patient’s own blood to stimulate hair growth. Human blood consists of several components and the plasma rich platelets are full of growth factors that repair damage in the body. When these platelets are extracted and applied to hair follicles, they work to trigger hair regrowth. Clinical studies show that PRP treatment for hair loss is highly effective with no negative side effects.

The PRP Procedure to Treat Hair Loss
Dr. Hunt and his staff are happy to answer any questions during your initial consultation, and they will keep you informed of each step during the PRP procedure. The PRP treatment will take approximately 45 minutes. Depending on your degree of hair loss and your goals, multiple treatment sessions may be advised to achieve optimal results.
The first step in the procedure is a blood draw. The process and the amount taken will be similar to a typical blood sample procedure at the doctor’s office.
Your blood will be placed in a centrifuge device to separate the blood components and extract the platelet rich plasma.
Then, the prepared PRP will be injected into the treatment area using a microneedling device. The PRP will stimulate the hair follicles to promote growth. You may experience some tenderness or mild swelling at the injection site, but most patients resume regular activities immediately after the procedure.
PRP Results for Hair Loss Patients
The body responds to the platelets immediately by activating dormant follicles, with optimal results 6 months after treatment. Many patients appreciate that the progressive results allow them to keep their treatment discreet as the hair gradually thickens. Yearly follow up appointments may be recommended to assess growth and schedule additional treatments if needed.
