Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®
With the Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U® treatments at our practice, you can potentially lower your risk of developing skin cancer. If you spend a lot of time in the sun without proper protection, you may begin to notice small, raised spots. Known as actinic keratoses (AK), these dry, scaly patches of skin can often progress into cancerous lesions, such as squamous cell carcinoma. Dr. Hunt. uses Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U® as a two-step treatment to reduce AK cells. This combination treatment can also be used to treat active acne as well.
Benefits of Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®
Due to the increased risk of skin cancer associated with AK lesions, Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U® treatments are highly recommended for anyone experiencing this dermal condition. Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U® treatments may be able to destroy these lesions before they progress into cancerous cells. Other benefits include:
- Minimal downtime is usually needed after treatment
- No daily medications to remember or prescriptions to fill
- Patients should not experience any scarring after treatment
What to Expect
For the first part of your treatment, Dr. Hunt will apply Levulan® Kerastick® Topical Solution to the AK lesions on your scalp and face. After the solution has been applied, it will need approximately one to two hours to effectively penetrate the targeted area. Be sure to bring proper sun protection with you to your appointment, such as a wide brimmed hat – you will need to cover the treated area and avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours after treatment. Exposure to other bright lights indoors should also be avoided, due to increased sensitivity in the treatment area.
After the topical solution has permeated the skin, Dr. Hunt will then use BLU-U®, a specialized light designed to cause a reaction in the Levulan® Kerastick® that can destroy AK lesions. We will provide you with eye protection before activating the BLU-U® light. BLU-U® light exposure is fairly brief, and typically last only about 20-30 minutes. Some patients may experience a stinging or burning sensation during treatment with BLU-U®, but this side effect should fade shortly after treatment.
Once the second part of your two-part treatment has been completed, it is recommended to continue to avoid exposing the treated areas to sunlight or other bright lights – patients can expect photosensitivity to continue for at least 40 hours after the initial treatment with Levulan® Kerastick® Topical Solution. After your BLU-U® treatment session, you may apply moisturizers as needed. Some patients continue to experience stinging or burning for approximately 24 hours after their BLU-U® treatment. Other side effects can include redness, swelling, itchiness, dryness and scaling. These side effects can sometimes last for up to four weeks after treatment, but should subside. Most patients notice exceptional cosmetic results in the treatment area after side effects have dissipated.
