Customizing BOTOX® Cosmetic for Men

male-poolCosmetic injectables can help to reduce common signs of aging and achieve a more refreshed and youthful appearance, but as a man you may have specific aesthetic goals. You probably want subtle enhancement—no one needs to know but you—that reflects your more masculine features. At Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we offer Brotox, BOTOX® Cosmetic that is customized to suit a man’s unique desired outcome and anatomic needs. Our experienced nurse injectors, including Kristen Thornley, ARNP, have the skills necessary to help you look younger, happier, and more rested with a simple treatment lasting approximately 10 minutes.

The difference between traditional treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic and Brotox for men is all in the technique. Men typically have thicker skin than women, and their concerns usually will be just as singular. We can customize a treatment plan during your initial consultation to target the areas that you want addressed. BOTOX® injections can help to smooth lines across the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes to give you a more rested and youthful look that is noticeable without being obvious. Friends and colleagues may remark that you look more relaxed and happy, but they should not attribute this change to a cosmetic procedure.

The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic are somewhat gradual compared to many cosmetic injectables, as they develop over the course of about three to seven days. This can help to achieve more natural-looking improvement. The results typically last approximately three to five months, depending on your unique experience, and they can be maintained with regular treatments. Little to no downtime is normal, and you should be able to return to regular activities immediately following the procedure. You may experience some redness or swelling at the injection sites, but these symptoms should fade quickly.

If you have additional questions about BOTOX® Cosmetic, or if you would like to schedule a consultation with one of our registered nurse injectors, please contact us today.

ResurFX® Vs. Levulan® Kerastick®: What’s the Best Laser Treatment for Me?

laserSun damage comes in many forms, and treating the numerous skin conditions that result from excess sun exposure can often require a variety of techniques. Fortunately, our cosmetic center offers some of the most advanced laser skin resurfacing methods available, including the ResurFX® laser and the two-part treatment system known as Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®. Determining whether one or both techniques can help achieve your dermatologic goals requires a better understanding of the specific purpose of each. Here’s a quick overview to assist in selecting the right laser skin treatment for your needs.

ResurFX®Laser: ResurFX® (Erbium 1565) is a minimally invasive fractional laser designed to treat cosmetic skin conditions – such as fine lines, acnes scars, and discolorations – as well as medical concerns like actinic keratosis (AK). ResurFX® laser skin resurfacing typically offers rapid healing and promotes natural collagen production. Though often effective on AK lesions, it is more commonly used as an aesthetic enhancement tool.

Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®: A two-part system designed to treat precancerous cells, the Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U® light treatment is single-minded in its approach. The procedure targets and destroys AK cells using a combination of a topical solution and blue light illumination. This system is highly effective at removing AK lesions, which can develop into squamous cell carcinoma—the second most deadly form of skin cancer.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Jeffrey Hunt will discuss your unique concerns and develop a customized treatment plan to address your cosmetic and medical aspirations. Depending on your goals, Dr. Hunt may recommend one, both, or even a different skin resurfacing technique to achieve the best results possible.

Skin Care in your 30’s

Welcome to the first in our 3 part blog discussing age related skin care concerns for your 30’s, 40’s and 50’s and what you can proactively do to fight back and reverse the signs of aging.

shutterstock_15530944In your 30’s:
Wrinkles and sun damage may begin to appear. Your skin may seem less radiant and may show signs of discoloration.

What you can do to fight back:

Skin pigmentation problems such as sun damage and blotchiness can start to appear in our thirties. Whereas daily sunscreen use will help prevent further damage, Intense Pulse Light or IPL treatments will help pick up sun damage under the skin surface and allow your skin to repair itself from the inside out, resulting in a smoother, fresher complexion.

Wrinkles start to appear in our thirties predominately in the brow, then out to the crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes. Botox Cosmetic, dramatically reduces facial wrinkles by simply reducing their cause, the muscles underneath your skin that contract to crumple your skin, resulting in wrinkles and folds on the surface.

Milder skin resurfacing treatments using Radio Frequency (RF energy) such as eMatrix Sublative Rejuvenation can also help reduce the appearance of old Acne Scars along with Sun Damage, Discoloration and Wrinkles and Fine Lines. While it heats the deep dermal layer of the skin it significantly stimulates collagen and even more importantly, elastin production which gives skin that “snap back” firmness.

shutterstock_118455784eMatrix Sublative Rejuvenation is a non-invasive, no-downtime non-laser solution for acne scars, wrinkles, skin laxity, uneven skin tone, and texture irregularities leaving the skin noticeably younger and fresher. Sublative Rejuvenation is the only fractional treatment that can be used on all skin types.

The secret to eMatrix Sublative Rejuvenation is that it works from the inside out. The fractionated bi-polar radio frequency penetrates through the skin, sending energy beneath the surface to maximize collagen production. It does this while keeping the top layer of the skin intact.

The difference can be seen after the first treatment with 3-4 treatments recommended for best results.

“Because of eMatrix’s unique bi-polar qualities it allows me to treat the delicate skin around the eyes, giving a lifted, more refreshed appearance by tightening the skin and improving texture. eMatrix does not recognize color therefore it’s a great treatment for all patients regardless of skin color.” – Emily Rudich, A.R.N.P., M.S.N

ResurFX skin resurfacing treatments are designed to target up to 50 percent of the skin’s surface, leaving the remaining 50 to 95 percent available to quickly help heal the treated areas. It literally tricks your skin into creating new skin to replace the damaged, or targeted areas, resulting in natural skin rejuvenation that takes years off your appearance.

Beauty Sleep

We’ve all been told (probably by our mothers) that it’s important to get your beauty rest. But, is there really any truth to this or was that Mom tactics for trying to get us to go to bed!!

Well, it turns out that some Swedish scientists have found that Mom was right and there is truth to this myth and they have the evidence to prove it.

The study was set out to find out specifically how others judge our attractiveness and health after a healthy night sleep versus sleep deprivation. There were 23 participants in the study, all between the ages of 18 and 31, and they were photographed after getting a full 8 hours of sleep and again when limited to 5 hours of sleep followed by 31 hours of sleep deprivation. The scientists then asked a group of untrained observers to rate the photographs based on the appearance of healthiness, attractiveness and overall tiredness. The observers were not told any information about the pictures but simply asked to rate them based on their opinion of the 3 areas of study.

“Our findings show that sleep-deprived people appear less healthy, less attractive and more tired compared with when they are well rested,” wrote the researchers. “This suggests that humans are sensitive to sleep-related facial cues.”

We do know that long term sleep deprivation takes a heavy toll on our body’s, minds and looks but this is the first study to research the short term effects of sleep deprivation.
So, get some sleep and go from rough to ravishing!

Intense Pulsed Light

With all the sun damage that we intentionally and unintentionally inflict on our skin living in a sunny climate it’s wise to learn about steps to prevent and help reduce signs of sun damage caused from years of sun worshipping. An IPL treatment is ideal for those wishing to improve the skin tone of their face, neck, chest or hands.

Photofacial or IPL is a laser generated light that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to target various chromophores in the skin. It is an effective treatment for concerns such as Sun Damage, Age or Sun Spots, Hyperpigmentation, Melasma, Freckles, Broken Capillaries, Redness or Flushing and Vascular Birthmarks (telangiectasias.) Patients suffering from Rosacea can also benefit from IPL treatments.

Best results typically require up to 4 treatments.

“Photofacials are the perfect treatment choice for those who suffer from Rosacea, Melasma, or pigmentation from sun exposure without any clinical downtime. It leaves the skin looking luminous a week after treatment!”
says Robin McClain, A.R.N.P., M.S.N., FNP.

Sun care for your skin includes wearing a minimum SPF factor of 30 for the face during the daytime (most foundations now typically include SPF protection) even when you do not plan on staying outdoors for any length of time. Wearing a hat, sunglasses and high protection Sunscreen (30SPF or higher) for any prolonged outdoor activities and reapplying often are all ways for protecting your skin from the sun.

Does Smiling Cause Smile Lines?

Q. Does smiling cause smile lines?

A. Not entirely. “Smile lines are typically the result of collagen and elasticity loss, part of the natural aging process which causes cheeks to drop and folds to form,” says Robin McClain A.R.N.P., F.N.P. As we age, our cells decline in the production of collagen and elastin, the building blocks for young, fresh, healthy looking skin. The lack of elastin and collagen leads to skin thinning, dryness and facial volume loss. As we use the muscles in our face the delicate skin starts to fold causing fine lines and wrinkles and in time deeper set folds, especially around the nose and mouth. “Repetitive facial movement will exaggerate these lines.”

The solution? Plump it back up and give your skin the building blocks to help repair itself! “We can inject dermal fillers such as Juvederm or Radiesse to lift the cheeks and into nasolabial folds, stimulating collagen rebuilding, and plumping up the skin in these areas of concern.”

Exilis™ – Skin Tightening and Fat Reduction

Exilis™ is the latest device available at the Vein and Cosmetic Center for Body Contouring, Wrinkle Reduction, Skin Tightening AND Anti-aging results.

For fat reduction, the Exilis™ Body Contouring Machine uses radiofrequency waves and electrical energy to liquefy and shrink fat cells by accelerating their metabolic activity.

The energy from the Exilis™ laser also stimulates collagen in the area, allowing for a tightening of the skin and a smoother appearance. This technique is very useful for patients wishing to reduce signs of wrinkles and fine lines along the skin.

“Patient’s are excited and encouraged when they see immediate results post treatment. Exilis™ can deliver 1-2cm reduction from their waist line as well as skin tightening and contouring of the lower face and neck” Robin McClain A.R.N.P., F.N.P.

For best results 4-6 treatments are recommended every 1-2 weeks apart.

Coolsculpting’s Premier Crystal Award Recipient

We are so proud to be the recent recipient of Coolsculpting’s Premier Crystal Award, the highest level available for Coolsculpting Practices!

Coolsculpting has given our patients the opportunity to reduce those areas of stubborn fat that they have not been able to achieve through diet and exercise alone. We have had some great results with the Coolsculpting system for our patients and have recently acquired the CoolCurve+ applicator which now lets us treat sharper curvature areas such as Banana Folds (under the bottom), Bra Line and Inner Thigh! This has really opened up the treatment options for areas of fat that were previously only reachable through invasive procedures such as Liposuction.

“What I love most about Coolsculpting is the fact that it has no downtime. You can go to work or the gym right after treatment, which my patients love. It is an excellent treatment option for permanent fat reduction for those stubborn, resistant bulges we all struggle with!” Emily Rudich A.R.N.P., M.S.N.

Coolsculpting draws the area of fat up into the applicator then cools the tissue to freezing temperatures which destroys the fat cells, but not damaging the surrounding skin. The destroyed fat cells are flushed through your body’s natural metabolism resulting in a decrease in fat for the area treated!
