Treating Rosacea: What Are My Options?

Cheek KissMillions of Americans suffer from the skin condition rosacea, which can negatively impact an individual’s life in a multitude of ways. If you’ve been diagnosed with rosacea, you may have tried numerous topical medications and oral medications to help ease the symptoms with little relief. While often helpful to a degree, these treatments typically cannot provide long-term results. Fortunately, our registered nurse practitioner, Kristen Thornley, offers state-of-the-art IPL (intense pulsed light) and laser skin resurfacing procedures that can minimize the severity of your flare-ups and reduce the frequency of their occurrence by treating the pathology.

IPL or Photofacials coagulate the unsightly facial blood vessels and redness treating the underlying pathology of vascularity with a laser light.

Rosacea may present with a variety of symptoms, which can range from mild redness and intermittent blushing or flushing to a more severe flare-up with painful red cysts. Most commonly located on the face, including the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin, rosacea can also appear elsewhere on the body. There is currently no cure for this condition, and the symptoms often worsen with time if left untreated.

At Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we treat all stages of rosacea. We offer a comprehensive selection of laser and light-based therapies, and we will develop a customized treatment plan for you based on your anatomic needs and expressed goals during your initial consultation. This plan may include one or more methods, including IPL, ResurFX®, and/or Pixel RF. One of the best aspects of using our advanced technology to address your rosacea concerns may be the potential to treat a wide variety of skin tones and types. Furthermore, these approaches also offer a cosmetic benefit, typically helping to improve your skin tone and texture while clearing the signs of rosacea.

If you have additional questions about rosacea or how to treat the condition, or if you would like to schedule a consultation with one of our specialists, please contact our office today.

Combat Sun Damage With Laser Skin Resurfacing

sun damageNicknamed the Sunshine State, Florida has an abundance of sunny weather, but the near-constant exposure to UV rays can have a damaging effect on skin, both cosmetically and medically. At our practice, we can help correct a number of unwanted skin conditions that occur due to sun damage – including age spots, wrinkles, and actinic keratosis (AK) lesions – utilizing state-of-the-art lasers and light therapies. Our innovative techniques typically offer dramatic improvement in skin tone and texture on both the face and the body, often with little to no downtime.

One of our most popular skin resurfacing treatments utilizes the ResurFX® Erbium 1565 laser. A fractional laser designed to reduce signs of early aging and treat precancerous AK lesions, ResurFX® is minimally invasive and can microscopically target affected areas while leaving healthy tissue undamaged. Some redness and swelling is common after each treatment; however, the directed application encourages rapid healing, and the result is often vibrant, more youthful-looking skin.

In addition to the ResurFX®, we offer a number of other laser skin resurfacing technologies – including Photofacial™ IPL®, CO2 Fractional laser, and Harmony® Pixel laser – that can correct hyperpigmentation, skin damage and other imperfections while stimulating new skin cell production.

ResurFX® Vs. Levulan® Kerastick®: What’s the Best Laser Treatment for Me?

laserSun damage comes in many forms, and treating the numerous skin conditions that result from excess sun exposure can often require a variety of techniques. Fortunately, our cosmetic center offers some of the most advanced laser skin resurfacing methods available, including the ResurFX® laser and the two-part treatment system known as Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®. Determining whether one or both techniques can help achieve your dermatologic goals requires a better understanding of the specific purpose of each. Here’s a quick overview to assist in selecting the right laser skin treatment for your needs.

ResurFX®Laser: ResurFX® (Erbium 1565) is a minimally invasive fractional laser designed to treat cosmetic skin conditions – such as fine lines, acnes scars, and discolorations – as well as medical concerns like actinic keratosis (AK). ResurFX® laser skin resurfacing typically offers rapid healing and promotes natural collagen production. Though often effective on AK lesions, it is more commonly used as an aesthetic enhancement tool.

Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®: A two-part system designed to treat precancerous cells, the Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U® light treatment is single-minded in its approach. The procedure targets and destroys AK cells using a combination of a topical solution and blue light illumination. This system is highly effective at removing AK lesions, which can develop into squamous cell carcinoma—the second most deadly form of skin cancer.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Jeffrey Hunt will discuss your unique concerns and develop a customized treatment plan to address your cosmetic and medical aspirations. Depending on your goals, Dr. Hunt may recommend one, both, or even a different skin resurfacing technique to achieve the best results possible.
