Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we just can’t get rid of the excess skin and fat that can accumulate in the abdominal region. Even the most rigorous diet and exercise regimens may not be very effective, and in those cases, an abdominoplasty can work wonders. Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as tummy tuck surgery, is designed to eliminate excess skin from the midsection and tighten abdominal muscles, giving the abdomen a flatter, more toned appearance. Dr. G. Peter Fakhre can help you attain your goals with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) at our Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg, Florida-area practice.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

Tummy tuck surgery addresses the excess fat and skin that can be left over after pregnancy, weight loss, and other factors. A full abdominoplasty surgery begins with an incision made from hip to hip, along the bikini-line. Although the incision will result in some scarring, Dr. Fakhre will work to make it as light as possible. Residual scarring is typically easily hidden by clothing or swimwear. After the incision is made, Dr. Fakhre will remove excess skin and fat, and tighten the underlying abdominal muscles. The remaining skin will be pulled taut, and the incisions closed.

Tummy tuck surgery typically takes about two to four hours to complete, and can be performed as an outpatient.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Patients should plan for a home recovery period of at least one to two weeks after a tummy tuck. Some bruising and swelling can be expected in the first few weeks after the procedure. Any pain and discomfort can be managed with medication. Dr. Fakhre will likely advise you to avoid strenuous exercise or strain to the abdominal region for at least six weeks following surgery. Patients will also be advised to take short walks as soon as they are able, to keep circulation flowing and aid in the recovery process. Temporary numbness may occur in the surgical area during recovery, and in some cases, this may be permanent. Dr. Fakhre will explain all risks, however small, to you at your initial consultation.

Mini-Tummy Tuck Surgery

Some patients may not need a full tummy tuck procedure, and therefore may benefit from a mini-tummy tuck surgery. This procedure focuses on excess skin that is primarily apparent below the belly button. Dr. Fakhre can correct the appearance of sagging, excess skin with a smaller incision using the mini-tummy tuck technique. The lower abdominal muscles will be tightened and extra skin in the lower abdomen will be removed. The procedure typically takes under three hours to complete and can be performed as an outpatient. Recovery from a mini-tummy tuck is typically similar to that of a full abdominoplasty; however the recovery process should be quicker and residual scarring will likely not be as extensive.

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) is one of the most popular surgical aesthetic enhancement procedures and is very effective at giving the abdominal area a tighter, more fit appearance. Please contact our practice with any questions you may have, and we’ll be happy to address your concerns.
