Gynecomastia

Affecting 40 to 60 percent of men, gynecomastia often begins in adolescence. Gynecomastia is excess fat, skin, and sometimes glandular tissue, that can build up in the breasts of men and make them appear enlarged. The exact cause of gynecomastia is not yet known; however some factors that have been attributed to the condition include:

  • Heredity
  • Obesity
  • Use of anabolic steroids
  • Certain prescription medications and medications that contain estrogen
  • Use of herbal testosterone additives
  • The natural aging process
  • Puberty
  • Irregularities in testicular hormone production
  • Liver function problems
  • Gilbert’s Syndrome
  • Klinefelter Sydrome

With male breast reduction surgery, liposuction, and other options, gynecomastia can be treated and a more toned appearance can be given to the chest area.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

The exact technique for male breast reduction will depend on each patient; however, the procedure typically involves small incisions made around the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple) or in the armpit. Dr. Fakhre will remove excess fat, skin, and/or glandular tissue. Liposuction may also be utilized to remove fat deposits. Any residual scarring should be very small, discreet, and easily hidden.

Male breast reduction surgery typically takes about one to two hours to complete; however, the exact time the procedure will take will depend on the extent of your condition. The procedure can be performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Men who undergo breast reduction surgery for gynecomastia can expect some swelling and discomfort after the procedure; however, this is normal and should fade over the next few days. The recovery period for male breast reduction surgery is typically minimal, and most patients can resume normal daily activities within a few days after the procedure.

Male breast reduction surgery can eliminate excess fat and tissue from the breasts for a flatter-looking chest. Please contact Dr. G. Peter Fakhre at the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay for more information, or to schedule a consultation.
