Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery can help those with breasts that are too large for their bodies, which can cause patients physical discomfort as well as emotional distress. Those who have overly large breasts often experience:

  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Excess drooping or sagging of the breasts
  • Bra-strap indentations in the skin
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Inability to fit into certain clothing
  • Self-consciousness

Breast reduction can be performed in a number of ways. Sometimes, liposuction alone can help you attain your ultimate goals; however, a full breast reduction procedure is often what is necessary. The procedure begins with an incision made around the areola (the dark-skinned area around the nipple), down to the breast crease. Another horizontal incision will be made in this area, forming an anchor shape. Exess fat and skin is removed, and the nipples moved to a higher location. The size of the breasts is ultimately decreased, giving you breasts in better proportion to your body.

The entire breast reduction procedure is typically performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia, and usually takes about three to four hours to complete.

Breast Reduction Recovery

There will be some swelling and some general discomfort in the first few days following surgery; however, this can be managed with medication. Although some scarring is inevitable, Dr. Fakhre is highly-skilled at making residual scarring as light as possible. Patients can often return to normal daily activities after about two weeks. Patients who are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed in the future, should discuss this with Dr. Fakhre in the initial consultation.
