Breast Implants

Breast implants, both saline and silicone, are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and types. Dr. Fakhre will meet with you in an initial consultation to discuss your goals, and together, you will choose the breast implants that will be best for your needs. The two main types of breast implants are:

Saline

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in women over the age of 18, saline breast implants are composed of a silicone outer shell, filled with a saline (saltwater) solution. Saline implants are often filled after placement into the chest, making it possible for Dr. Fakhre to create a smaller incision, and therefore, less visible scarring. In cases of implant rupture, the saline inside the implant is easily absorbed by the body. In some cases saline implants have been known to cause a rippling appearance to the breasts. They can also potentially cause a condition called capsular contracture, which is scar tissue forming around the implant that gives the area a hardened feel.

Silicone

Silicone breast implants are approved by the U.S. FDA for breast augmentation procedures in women over the age of 22. They are made of a silicone outer shell and filled with a silicone gel. With silicone breast implants, there is less risk of developing a rippling appearance, as opposed to their saline counterparts. Silicone implants are also known for their natural look and feel. However, as with saline breast implants, there is a risk of capsular contracture. Plus, a rupture in a silicone implant is less noticeable than with a saline implant. It is important for patients with silicone breast implants to undergo routine breast exams to ensure that the implants are working properly.

Incisions

Incisions for a breast augmentation procedure can be created in a number of different areas, depending on your needs. Incision locations will also depend on whether the implants are being placed beneath the chest muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. Dr. Fakhre will take great care to make any residual scarring as light as possible. Incisions are usually made in one of the following areas: under the breast crease; around the areola (the dark-pigmented region surrounding the nipple); or through the armpit. After placement, the incisions are closed and the procedure complete. Breast augmentation with implants typically takes about one to two hours to complete and can be performed as an outpatient.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Bruising, swelling, and numbness can be expected in the first few weeks after breast augmentation surgery; however, pain and discomfort can be controlled with medication. Patients are usually able to get back to their normal daily activities about one week after surgery. When you have a mammogram, a special version of the exam will need to be performed in order to see around the implants for the most accurate results possible.

Dr. Fakhre prides himself on delivering natural-looking, beautiful breast augmentation results that add fullness and new contours to the breasts. Please contact the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay to schedule a consultation, and we will be happy to address any concerns you may have.
